Ardnamurchan
is the best-kept secret of the Highlands of Scotland, a stunningly
beautiful area with spectacular coastal and mountain scenery
all around and many glorious empty beaches with clean, clear
seas.
We
have a fascinating history - this is the land of Bonnie Prince
Charlie, and evidence of the Highland Clearances, and even
earlier prehistoric remains, are everywhere.
The
area teems with wildlife, much of it rare - otters, golden
and sea eagles, black-throated divers, pine martens and the
not-so-rare red deer are all local residents.
Ardnamurchan
was once a huge volcano and the evidence is everywhere - the
whole of Moidart and Ardnamurchan is a geologist's dream.
Walkers
will find paradise here. Our highest mountains rise to just
under 3000 feet - it is normal to walk all day in peaceful,
hidden glens or on our spectacular hills and see no-one.
Visits
to such places as the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, the most westerly
point in mainland Britain, or the excellent Sunart Oakwoods
wildlife hide on Loch Sunart cannot be missed.
Almost
from the doorstep at Chimneys you can take a trip on the MV
Sileas along Loch Shiel, 17 miles of inland loch running from
Acharacle to Glenfinnan, passing on the way the hauntingly-lovely
St. Finan's Isle, almost certainly a pre-Christian burial
island.
Cycling
is another popular activity on our uncrowded and scenic roads.
Eating
out is no problem - the area has a wide variety of excellent
pubs and restaurants within easy reach - and you can walk
to several of them from Chimneys.
